As a recruitment agency, focused on international talent, relocating developers is part of what we do every day.

What companies are usually concerned about when it comes to relocation is how long it takes and how to be sure of a candidate’s motivation to follow through. From a candidate perspective, they want to know what support they will receive in the relocation process.

We spoke to a few of our candidates, who recently relocated to Berlin, to learn from their experience.

Guilherme Santos
Software Developer @Fri:day
Relocated from Brazil

Why Berlin? The job I had in my city was not challenging anymore and therefore I decided to look for a bigger city to challenge myself. I was originally aiming for Sao Paolo, but then I got this opportunity in Berlin. Berlin is known as Silicon Valley of Europe (startups, tech scene), so I decided for Berlin.

How long did the process take? It took 4 months from the 1st interview to arriving in Berlin. The visa process was 3 months as there was some delay from the German Embassy to process the documents. I was assisted by a relocation agency and they handled the process quite well.

Your experience with interviewing remotely? The experience was ok – I was not at all surprised when I arrived, everything was as it appeared during the interviews.

Pros and cons of relocation in your experience? Pros – New country, new culture, making new friends. Cons – Missing my country, difficult to be so far from home.

What helped you most throughout the transition? I came with my wife and she was a great support for me. Also, the company cares a lot about where we live and if we are happy here. People are very friendly and Berlin is a city of immigrants. There are many people in the same situation. I am doing lot of new things such as travelling, going to museums, etc.

What could have been done better? A bit more training and onboarding in the first days would have been helpful.

If you could go back, would you do it again? For sure.

Frontend Developer @AskCharlie
Relocated from Argentina

Why Berlin? I did not have a special reason. I got the opportunity and I thought it could be good for me to have this new experience, for my professional and personal growth. Berlin was a good fit as I speak German. I was also here previously and quite liked the lifestyle.

How long did the relocation process take? 3 months from the 1st interview to arriving in Berlin. The visa process was around 1.5 month – 2 months.

Pros and cons of relocation in your experience? Pros – knowing the language, the lifestyle is very nice, the transport is much better, the people are nice. Cons – going through the process and waiting for the visa, finding apartment, getting settled, cultural differences, the weather.

What helped you most throughout the transition? The team in the company – they provided me with lot of information. Having nice colleagues helped me feel welcome.

What could have been done better? I got confirmation about the visa and needed to relocate right away, so I did not have too much time to look for an apartment. Also, I arrived during Christmas holidays when everyone was leaving on holidays. It would have been useful to speak to others in the same situation, who have relocated recently.

If you could go back, would you do it again? Yes, definitely. It is a good change that makes you grow personally and professionally.
